I had a talk at MesosCon 2017 Europe in Prague about building highly scalable, mission-critical microservices with Apache Kafka, Kafka Streams and Apache Mesos / DCOS. I would like to share the slides and a video recording of the live demo.

Abstract

Microservices establish many benefits like agile, flexible development and deployment of business logic. However, a Microservice architecture also creates many new challenges. This includes increased communication between distributed instances, the need for orchestration, new fail-over requirements, and resiliency design patterns.

Why I Move (Back) to Open Source for Messaging, Integration and Stream Processing

After three great years at TIBCO Software, I move back to open source and join Confluent, a company focusing on the open source project Apache Kafka to build mission-critical, scalable infrastructures for messaging, integration and streaming analytics. Confluent is a Silicon Valley startup, still in the beginning of its journey, with a 700% growing business in 2016, and is exjustpected to grow significantly in 2017 again.

In this blog post, I want to share why I see the future for middleware and big data analytics in open source technologies, why I really like Confluent, what I will focus on in the next months, and why I am so excited about this next step in my career.

Microservices = Death of the Enterprise Service Bus (ESB)? – Slide Deck and Video Recording

In 2015, the middleware world focuses on two buzzwords: Docker and Microservices. Software vendors still sell products such as an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) or Complex Event Processing (CEP) engines. How is this related?

Docker is a fascinating technology to deploy and distribute modules (middleware, applications, services) quickly and easily. Most people agree that Docker will change the future of software development in the next years. I will do another blog post about how Docker is related to TIBCO and how you can deploy and distribute Microservices with Docker and TIBCO products such as TIBCO EMS and BusinessWorks 6 easily.

Java / JVM – When to use Multicast (e.g. Tibco Rendevous) instead of Point-to-Point Messaging (JMS Implementations)

Several solutions are available in the Java / JVM environment for messaging. All have in common that they exist for many years and still do its job in mission critical systems: Sending remote messages fast and reliable. There exist two different concepts which compete against each other for enterprise messaging solutions.  This article describes and compares Point-to-Point (diverse JMS implementations) and Multicast (e.g. Tibco Rendevous) messaging  to answer the question when to use which one. Although both solutions are available for many years now, this question is still very important – also for new software!

Evaluation of the Product SOAtest (Parasoft) to test your SOA

In the last few days, I had to evaluate the product SOAtest (Parasoft). SOAtest is an Eclipse-based testing tool, which supports most important technologies and vendors to test your Service-oriented Architecture (SOA) technically.

What is SOAtest?

SOAtest is a tool to realize integration tests for your Service-orientied Architecture. It is Eclipse-based, therefore a developer can easily start with the product. You create most tests using the Eclipse-GUI, configure your specific tests (e.g. queue managers or database connections) and define the behaviour of the tests. The tests can also be integrated in your build server or test tools such as HP Quality Center.
